Creating Your Feeding Space

Most newborns eat every 2 to 3 hours, or 8 to 12 times every 24 hours. It is important to create a comfortable and functional area for both you and baby. You will be in these spot often and for periods of time.

Whether your bottle, tube or chest feeding. The chair should be comfortable for both the caregiver and baby and allow you to stay seated for extended periods. Especially once cluster feeding begins.

Items you should keep in arms reach for you may include:

  • water bottle

  • handheld snacks

  • pain medication

  • nipple cream

  • nipple shield

  • lip chap

  • don’t forget a phone charger or power bank.

Items you may need for baby include:

  • diapers

  • wipes

  • vitamin D drops

  • face or body cream

  • burp cloths, soother

  • favourite stuffie

  • comfortable blanket.

Keeping these items close by will allow you to feel prepared, organized and not feel overwhelmed once cluster feeding begins. Or even during those midnight feeds.

Cluster feeding is a time when your baby wants lots of short feeds over a few hours. It's normal and often happens in the early days of breastfeeding. Cluster feeding is a normal behaviour for your baby.
